Baltimore’s own Paula Gately Tillman is a seasoned photographer best known for capturing photos across New York and Atlanta during the 80s and 90s. After studying photography in Aspen, Colorado under celebrated photographer Eileen Lewis, Gately Tillman moved to New York in pursuit of making photography a career and to study at the School of Visual Arts. Upon meeting Brant Mewborn in 1984 (then senior editor of Rolling Stone), Gately Tillman was exposed to future subjects of her work including musicians and drag queens; among the notable personalities Gately Tillman has photographed in these lively scenes are RuPaul and Tish and Snooky Bellomo. In addition to her permanent collection at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Gately Tillman’s work has been displayed in libraries like Emory University‘s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library and internationally.

Gately-Tillman’s multi award-winning book, Fringe, New York and Atlanta, 1984 to 1997, offers exclusive photographic insight into subcultures such as fashion and drag in both cities using black and white darkroom photos. Fringe and Gately-Tillman’s collector’s box are available for purchase here.
