Jeffrey Henson Scales has led an amazing life, from photographing the Black Panthers at age 14 to managing Minnie Ripperton, posing for Playgirl, co-founding the LA Weekly, and so much more. Currently teaching at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and working as the Photography Editor for the New York Times Opinion Section, as well as the “Year in Pictures” special editions. Scales sat down with Molly and Joe to discuss everything from his time with the Panthers, to his book recommendations and the problematic nature of AI. It’s a great chat and who knew his wife was Angela Davis’ double for security while she was on trial? Seriously.
His book In A Time of Panthers is filled with incredible photographs taken while he was still an early teen and only recently rediscovered in the back of a filing cabinet at his parent’s home. In House he documents the life of a Harlem barbershop. Contact Sheet 161: That Year of Living is a series of street photos taken following his successful cancer treatment.
